Lunch N Learn – Living Legends: Success Stories from Industry Leaders

 
 

At WasteExpo 2013 in New Orleans, the EIA Women’s Council is pleased to present two industry powerhouses who will trace their successful courses of action through the recent economic crisis. Charlie Appleby, President and CEO, Advanced Disposal Services, will review his company’s rapid growth from local Florida roots to a national business. Scott Dols, President and CEO, Big Truck Rental, will explain what it takes to grow at a time when competitors fail and customers restrict capital spending. Both will highlight the role of partners, investors, capital structure, and changing market conditions.

Lunch N Learn – The Importance of Social Media: A Southwest Airlines Story

During this session, Southwest Airlines' (SWA) Brandy King shared how her company gleans the following business value from using social media to address issue expectations:

  • How to identify emerging issues on social networks and deal with them appropriately
  • How to use social media to share good news stories, build brand advocates and spread positive impact both internally and externally
  • How to deal with the sheer speed and spread of social news, even at times keeping several steps ahead

King concluded with actions taken to ensure consistent communication on issues across all channels. She shared how SWA navigates the consumer conversation online as the airline fights to stay ahead of the Communication Evolution. The session included time for Q&A.

Lunch N Learn – Sustainable Landfill Leachate Management with Treatment Wetlands (biofilters)

During this session Steve Apfelbaum, Founder and Principle Ecologist for Applied Ecological Services, presented his experiences in using treatment wetlands (biofilters) at landfills and other properties. The session covered the use of biofilters in cold climates; how treated waters can be managed onsite to avoid trucking or sewering fees; treating landfill stormwater; the justification of native vegetation in designs; maintenance of biofilters; leachate challenges, such as changes in volume, temperature, and odor; and the added benefits of an endemic ecological design. The session included time for Q&A.

EIA Women's Council ERT Sunset Reception and Golf Clinic

  The EIA Executive Roundtable (ERT) conference was held at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, California. On Monday, October 15, at 5:30 p.m., the EIA Women's Council hosted the Sunset Reception, themed Surf's Up. The EIA Women’s Council also hosted its traditional Golf Clinic at the Monarch Beach Golf Links on Tuesday, October 16.

Lunch N Learn – How to Avoid Greenwashing Your Business: Best Practices for Truthful Communication

  • How to talk about sustainability or "green" efforts in a meaningful way that will make people listen.

  • Problems associated with greenwashing and some of the potential legal trouble associated with misleading customers, clients and others about your sustainability efforts.

PRESENTOR: Will Flower has 29 years of experience working in the field of environmental protection. His career started in 1983 when he began working for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency on solid waste issues. In 1990, he was hired by Waste Management, Inc. In 1999, he was hired by Republic Services. In 2000, he moved to Republic’s corporate office where he served as the Vice President of Communications, overseeing internal and external communications, public affairs, crisis management and community relations. Following Republic’s acquisition of Allied Waste Industries, Inc. in 2008, Flower was named Executive Vice President of Communications and in 2011 he was named the Senior Vice President of Communications. He retired from Republic Services in May 2012.

Lunch N Learn – An Antitrust Primer

  • An introduction to criminal antitrust law.
  • A discussion of what activities constitute an offense under the Sherman Antitrust Act, and the penalties for violations.
  • A brief primer on detecting and reporting antitrust offenses.
  • Examples of enforcement against solid waste companies and historic divestiture requirements in connection with certain mergers;
  • Certain rules of the road (i.e., don't get together with a competitor and decide one will focus on area X while the other focuses on area Y);
  • Certain contractual provisions that raise antitrust concerns ("evergreen provisions"); and
  • NSWMA's strict adherence to the Noerr-Pennington doctrine which protects joint activity by competitors in the advocacy context.

PRESENTORS: Michael Boomgarden is a Trial Attorney with the Midwest Office of the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Chicago, Illinois. And David Biderman is the EIA General Counsel and Director of Safety. Biderman develops the associations’ positions on a variety of legal issues, including flow control and interstate.

Lunch N Learn – Improving Your Refuse Intelligence: How EREF Adds Value to the Solid Waste Industry

PRESENTOR: Dr. Bryan Staley joined the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) 3 years ago, where he started as Vice President of Environmental Programs. He has 17 years’ experience in the environmental engineering field and has held key positions in consulting firms as a project manager and Vice President of Engineering, where he managed projects related to wastewater treatment system design, retail/commercial land development, stormwater design/permitting and large-scale livestock operations.

EIA Women's Council ERT Golf Clinic and Sunset Seminar and Reception

 

The EIA Executive Roundtable (ERT) conference was held at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida. On Monday, October 17, at 5:30 p.m., the EIA Women's Council hosted the Sunset Seminar and Reception. During this seminar, a representative from the Naples Historical Society’s speakers bureau talked about the history and heritage of Naples. On Tuesday, October 18, from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., the EIA Women’s Council once again sponsored a golf clinic at the Rick Smith Golf Academy at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort.

EIA Women's Council President's Conference

 

Every year the EIA Women's Council President organizes a conference for the Women's Council members. The 2011 President, Kirsti Nelson, is Director of Marketing for Otto Environmental Systems North America, headquartered in Charlotte, NC.

  • On Monday, August 29, the group met for lunch at 11:30 a.m. and then headed out for a white water rafting adventure.
  • Later that evening, the group had dinner and heard the presentation "Living with Purpose, Leading with Passion" by Todd Gothberg, Volvo Construction Equipment Company.
  • On Tuesday, August 30, the group visited the City of Charlotte Solid Waste Field Operations to learn about the Tailgating Recycling Program and Special Events Waste Collection.
  • Later that day, they toured the Otto Environmental Systems manufacturing and services tour.

Two industry leaders discussed their companies from their beginnings to current successful operations.  Mickey Flood, Vice Chairman and director, IESI-BFC, Inc., spoke on "From Two Trucks to Wall Street" and Mike Sangiacomo, President and CEO, Recology, spoke on "Two Horses to Recology."  This session was developed by the Environmental Industry Associations Women's Council. Moderator: Stephen Smith, Atwell.

Women's Council President's Conference: Communicating Today

 

Women's Council President Nancy Bretas led the 2009 Women's Council President's Conference in Savannah, Georgia, immediately preceding the NSWMA/WASTEC Executive Roundtable Conference. Bretas is the manager of communications for Republic Services in Phoenix, Arizona. In keeping with the tradition of spotlighting the professional expertise of the current president, the 2009 sessions focused on communications: internal, external, media relations, government relations and social networking.

Sessions included:

PRESENTOR: Stephanie Hinson (shinson@srlandfill.com) is the CEO of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's commercial landfill. The Salt River Landfill accepts 2,100 tons per day from the cities of Mesa and Scottsdale, the Town of Gilbert, Salt River and Fort McDowell Indian Communities, and private haulers. The 200-acre site consists of 144 acres of Subtitle D landfill, Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), greenwaste processing/recycling, scrap metal recycling and a landfill gas collection system which is connected via pipeline to a 4 MW power generating facility.

Lunch N Learn – Greenhouse Gas Emissions Accounting for Solid Waste Operations

 

This presentation examined the developing standards in accounting for greenhouse gas emissions and illustrated how they apply to the solid waste industry. Topics presented included types of reports, determining what needs to be reported, the reporting process, methods for quantifying GHG emissions, and a sample of some of the sector-specific reporting requirements for solid waste operations.

PRESENTOR: James G. Peck, P.E. is Vice President of Engineering at Hydro Geo Chem, Inc., where he also serves as Corporate Counsel. Mr Peck has participated in a number of international greenhouse gas emission offset projects under the Kyoto Protocol related to reduction in methane emissions from landfills in developing countries. He has 17 years of experience as a civil and environmental engineer serving the solid waste industry on a variety of projects in the design, permitting, and construction of environmental protection systems at solid waste facilities.

PRESENTOR: Ruth Abbe, Vice President and National Practice Leader in Zero Waste Planning for HDR, is a senior management consultant and program manager with over 20 years of experience in developing programs in source reduction, recycling, organics diversion, and construction and demolition debris management. She leads the HDR sustainability services group in California, which focuses on zero waste planning, renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions reduction and sustainability planning and program implementation. She is currently assisting the cities of San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles in achieving their zero waste goals.

WASTE EXPO Box Lunch – MAKE SOME NOISE: The Harley Davidson Story

 

The EIA Women's Council's presented a speaker for the Monday, May 5, Box Lunch during WASTE EXPO in Chicago.

PRESENTOR: Ken Schmidt has been associated with Harley-Davidson since 1985. His presentation will center around the motorcycle's legend turnaround from the brink of ruin to global dominance. His success in helping improve the company's reputation and creating demand for its products is a timely reference for any waste industry professional. In his role as Harley's director of communication, Schmidt shaped the company's positioning and messaging, and served as its primary spokesperson to the media and financial communities.

PRESENTOR: Michelle Leonard has directed solid waste programs for both the public and private sectors, including special event and public venue source reduction, recycling and organic diversion programs for stadiums, conference centers, theaters, and other public facilities. Most recently Michelle has handled the recycling for the Rose Bowl. She is a Vice President of SCS Engineers, an environmental consulting firm specializing in solid waste management and has 20 years of experience in environmental consulting and project management, with emphasis in solid waste issues. She directs SCS' Solid Waste Planning and Facility practice in California and the west.
